Emulsifier molecules in the solution coat the surface of these droplets, enabling them to remain stably dispersed in water.<br><br>However, producing a high-quality bitumen emulsion involves more than simply mixing bitumen and solution at predetermined ratios. Softer bitumens may require a lower temperature, while harder grades may require a higher temperature.<br><br>The inlet viscosity at the colloid mill is just as important as the temperature. The tank agitator must ensure uniform distribution of the chemicals.<br><br>The following parameters should be controlled during solution preparation:<br><br>* Water quantity and quality<br>* Emulsifier dosage<br>* Acid dosage<br>* Solution temperature<br>* pH value<br>* Mixing time<br>* Order in which the chemicals are added<br><br>Water hardness and mineral content can also affect product quality. High levels of calcium, magnesium or other ions may alter emulsifier performance and storage stability.<br><br>For most standard production processes, the solution temperature may be approximately <strong>35\u201360\u00b0C<\/strong>. The precise value should nevertheless be determined according to the bitumen temperature, bitumen content, emulsifier type and target mill outlet temperature.<br><br>The chemistry of anionic emulsions is different. An alkaline component is generally used instead of acid. It should be rechecked whenever the formulation or water source changes, not only at the initial start-up.<br><br>The acid type and target pH must be selected according to the emulsifier&#8217;s technical characteristics and the required emulsion grade. Actual temperatures must be selected according to bitumen penetration, bitumen content, emulsifier type and plant conditions.<br><br>In atmospheric systems, the bitumen emulsion temperature at the colloid mill outlet <strong>must not reach 100\u00b0C<\/strong>. <br><br>Approaching the boiling point of water may cause:<br><br>* Flash vaporisation<br>* Foaming<br>* Pressure build-up in pipelines<br>* Unstable pump operation<br>* Loss of emulsion stability<br>* Operational safety risks<br><br>For example, a bitumen temperature of approximately 130\u2013140\u00b0C and a solution temperature of approximately 40\u201360\u00b0C may result in an outlet temperature close to 90\u00b0C, depending on the bitumen content.<br><br>The outlet temperature is not determined solely by the inlet temperatures of the two phases. Mechanical friction inside the colloid mill also adds heat to the product.<br><br>If production above 100\u00b0C is required because of harder or polymer-modified bitumen, a back-pressure system and an emulsion cooler should be used to prevent the water from boiling.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-info-box uagb-block-f944fa9e uagb-infobox__content-wrap  uagb-infobox-icon-above-title uagb-infobox-image-valign-top\"><div class=\"uagb-ifb-content\"><div class=\"uagb-ifb-title-wrap\"><h2 class=\"uagb-ifb-title\">6. An excessively fine droplet structure may increase energy consumption and change the breaking behaviour of some formulations.<br><br>Motor power and stated tonnes-per-hour capacity should not be the only criteria when selecting a colloid mill. Rotor\u2013stator geometry, adjustable gap, construction material, wear resistance and actual operating flow must be considered together.<br><br>Wear can gradually increase the rotor\u2013stator gap.
