Polymer Modified Bitumen Plant for SBS and polymer modified bitumen production

What Is a Polymer Modified Bitumen Plant ?

A Polymer Modified Bitumen Plant, also known as a PMB Plant or Bitumen Modification Plant, is an industrial production system designed to modify standard bitumen with polymer additives under controlled temperature, dosing, and mixing conditions.

Standard bitumen may be susceptible to rutting at high temperatures and cracking at low temperatures. In a PMB Production Plant, polymers such as SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene), APP (Atactic Polypropylene), EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate), and similar additives improve the elasticity, adhesion, temperature resistance, and long-term durability of the binder.

An SBS Bitumen Modification Plant provides consistent product quality through precise polymer dosing, controlled heating, and homogeneous high-shear mixing. The resulting polymer modified bitumen offers improved resistance to deformation, fatigue, ageing, and changing climatic conditions.

PMB Plant Technical Specifications and Production Capacities

MBA manufactures Polymer Modified Bitumen Plants in different capacities and configurations according to project requirements. The table below presents the standard production capacities, high shear mill capacities, bitumen pump capacities, and mixing tank configurations of our most commonly supplied PMB Plant models.

What Are the Technical Advantages of MBA Polymer Modified Bitumen Plants ?

To ensure continuous production and high homogeneity under demanding site conditions, our PMB Plants are equipped with the following technical advantages:

High Shear Modification Mill:

A high shear mill ensures that polymers are fully dispersed within the bitumen and reduced to micron-sized particles. This structure provides fast, stable, and homogeneous production in the Polymer Modified Bitumen Plant.

User-Friendly Automation:

A dual-safety control panel with both fully automatic PLC operation and manual control minimizes operator errors and ensures reliable process management.

Insulated and Heated Mixing Tanks:

Polymer mixing tanks are insulated with high-quality materials to minimize heat loss. This reduces energy consumption and ensures stable production temperatures.

Special Agitator System:

Specially designed blade-type agitators are used to homogenize the polymer and bitumen inside the mixing tanks.

Automatic SBS Feeding Unit:

An integrated automatic SBS feeding system transfers the polymer from the hopper to the tanks in a clean, dust-free, and loss-free manner.

Pneumatically Actuated Valves:

High-temperature-resistant automatic bitumen valves provide precise and instantaneous flow control throughout the entire process line.

Jacketed Bitumen Pumps:

Heavy-duty bitumen pumps with thermal oil-heated jackets are used for bitumen filling and modified bitumen discharge operations, reducing the risk of solidification.

Multilingual Software Support:

Advanced multilingual software facilitates operation in international projects and improves user accessibility.

Comfortable Operator Cabin:

An air-conditioned operator cabin with a wide field of view provides a comfortable working environment protected from harsh site conditions.

Single-Unit Mobility Advantage:

Thanks to its compact modular design, the Containerized PMB Plant can be transported as a single unit on a trailer chassis or within container dimensions.

In addition to manufacturing Polymer Modified Bitumen Plants, MBA designs and commissions turnkey systems including modified bitumen storage tanks, fully automated piping lines, high-efficiency thermal oil heaters, and all required auxiliary equipment.

How Does a Polymer Modified Bitumen Plant Work ?

The production process in a Polymer Modified Bitumen Plant is based on modifying bitumen homogeneously with polymer additives under controlled temperature conditions and high shear force. Throughout the production process, temperature, mixing time, polymer ratio, and circulation time are continuously monitored by the PLC automation system.

The general process flow is as follows:

* Bitumen is heated in the storage tank to an operating temperature of approximately 180–190°C.

* The heated bitumen is transferred to the PMB mixing tank by means of bitumen transfer pumps.

* Polymer additives such as SBS, APP, and EVA are fed into the bitumen in controlled quantities through the automatic dosing system, and preliminary mixing is carried out.

* The pre-mixed product passes through the High Shear Mill, where the polymer is dispersed homogeneously throughout the bitumen at micron level. The product then returns to the mixing tank, and circulation continues.

* The mixture circulates between the mixing tank and the High Shear Mill for the period specified in the production recipe until the required modification level is achieved.

* Once production is completed, the Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) is transferred to the storage tanks and held at a controlled temperature for a specified period to allow the polymer structure to stabilize completely.

* After the quality control process is completed, the PMB is ready to feed the asphalt plant or to be dispatched.
