A polymer modified bitumen plant (PMB) produces more flexible and durable modified bitumen by mixing bitumen with polymers. The produced modified bitumen is stored in bitumen tanks and then used in the asphalt plant to produce polymer-modified hot asphalt. Due to the chemical structure of petroleum, pure bituminous asphalt often fails to provide the desired pavement performance under increased traffic loads and adverse weather conditions. To achieve a more flexible asphalt structure, modified bitumen has become essential for asphalt producers.
MBA manufactures modified bitumen plants (PMB) with capacities of 10-15-20 tons/hour. Depending on customer demand, it is designed as a compact or stationary unit within the chassis. The compact type modified bitumen plant is more advantageous in terms of transportation and installation time.
Before starting polymer modified bitumen production, the bitumen in the storage tank needs to be heated to a temperature of 170-190°C. The polymer required for producing modified bitumen is loaded into the polymer bunker. After this stage, the MBA polymer modified bitumen plant is ready for production, and the operator can proceed step by step.
Stage 1
The heated bitumen in the bitumen tank is transferred by pump to one of the modified bitumen production tanks. There are two modified bitumen production tanks available, both of which have bitumen weighing capabilities. The operator sets the amount of bitumen to be loaded via the automation system. Once the bitumen preparation tank is filled, the mixer is activated. The SBS loaded into the polymer bunker is transferred to the bitumen preparation tank via a screw conveyor, with the quantity determined by the automation system. In the bitumen preparation tank, the polymer and bitumen are mixed for approximately 20 minutes.
Stage 2
The polymer-modified bitumen mixture is then transferred from the first bitumen tank to the second bitumen tank via the mill using a pump. The purpose here is to ensure thorough mixing of the polymer into the bitumen using the modified bitumen mill. The polymer-modified bitumen mill has a power of approximately 160 kW and performs high-speed shearing. After one pass, a sample of the modified bitumen is taken for testing. If the sample does not meet the specifications, the mixture is passed through the mill a second time to complete the production.
Stage 3
The modified bitumen produced in the plant is pumped into the modified bitumen storage tank. This storage tank is equipped with a mixer to prevent clumping of the modified bitumen. The stored modified bitumen should be mixed for about 10 minutes every hour. For use in the asphalt plant, it should be stored and used at a temperature of 160-190°C.
