What is Plant Mix Base (PMB) ?
Plant mix base (PMB) is the most critical structural foundation layer laid directly beneath the asphalt wearing course in road construction to increase the load-bearing capacity of the pavement.
PMB is prepared by mixing clean aggregates of at least three different fractions (sizes) that have undergone crushing and screening processes (in a crushing plant) with water at precise ratios specified in the recipe, utilizing a high-efficiency base mixing plant.

Types of Plant Mix Base (PMB) and Regional Applications
Depending on the technical specifications of the project and geographical conditions, plant mix base material can be modified not only with water but also with different binding agents:
Standard PMB: The classic road base material obtained by mixing graded aggregate and water.
Cement or Bitumen Emulsion Treated PMB: Cement or bitumen emulsion is added to the mixture to maximize the strength, cohesion, and flexibility of the material. Cement-treated or bitumen emulsion-treated plant mix base applications are highly common, especially in countries with harsh winter conditions such as Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.
Importance and Application of PMB Layer in Road Construction
Before applying Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), strengthening the subgrade in compliance with engineering standards is of vital importance. If the subgrade stability and bearing capacity are insufficient, the hot mix asphalt pavement laid on top will suffer from cracks, rutting, and sudden structural failures in a short time.
PMB Laying and Compaction Process
The homogeneous plant mix material, produced with full automation in the base mixing plant, is precisely laid on the job site using an aggregate spreader (asphalt paver). Following the laying process, compaction is carried out using steel-drum and pneumatic rollers to ensure the material reaches its maximum density at optimum moisture content.
PMB Layer Thickness According to Traffic Density
The thickness of the plant mix base layer to be laid on the roadbed varies depending on the daily heavy vehicle volume and traffic density of the project. According to international highway standards, this thickness is generally designed between 50 cm and 120 cm.
Aggregate Quality Standards in High-Quality PMB
To obtain high performance and long-term durability from plant mix base material, the aggregate quality must be flawless.
Critical Engineering Warning: Clay, silt, and similar foreign materials must strictly not be present in the PMB mixture. Fine-grained foreign substances like clay and silt prevent the aggregates from interlocking (binding) with each other during compaction. This leads to loosening in the base structure, significantly reducing the overall efficiency and load-bearing capacity of the pavement.
MBA Base Mixing Plant (Mechanical Stabilization) Technology
Consistent production of Plant Mix Base (PMT) with accurate material proportions and full specification compliance requires a precisely engineered base mixing plant.
